que se precipitou;
e eis no que dá. Porque o Tempo é,
mais que tudo, contemporizador.

No teu cabelo negro brilham estrelas
cadentes, arredias.
Para onde irão elas
tão cedo, resolutas?
– Vem, deixa eu lavá-lo, aqui nesta bacia
amassada e brilhante como a lua.

The shampoo

The still explosions on the rocks,
the lichens, grow
by spreading gray, concentric shocks.
They have arranged
to meet the rings around the moon, although
within our memories they have not changed.

And since the heavens will attend
as long on us,
you've been, dear friend,
precipitate and pragmatical;
and look what happens.  For Time is
nothing if not amenable.

The shooting stars in your black hair
in bright formation
are flocking where,
so straight, so soon?
– Come, let me wash it in this big tin basin,
battered and shiny like the moon.

Elizabeth Bishop: "Insomnia" / "Insônia": trad. Paulo Henriques Britto

Insônia

A lua no espelho da cômoda
está a mil milhas, ou mais
(e se olha, talvez com orgulho,
porém não sorri jamais)
muito além do sono, eu diria,
ou então só dorme de dia.

Se o Mundo a abandonasse,
ela o mandava pro inferno,
e num lago ou num espelho
faria seu lar eterno.
— Envolve em gaze e joga
tudo que te faz sofrer no

poço desse mundo inverso
onde o esquerdo é que é o direito,
onde as sombras são os corpos,
e à noite ninguém se deita,
e o céu é raso como o oceano
é profundo, e tu me amas.

Insomnia

The moon in the bureau mirror
looks out a million miles
(and perhaps with pride, at herself,
but she never, never smiles)
far and away beyond sleep, or
perhaps she's a daytime sleeper.

By the Universe deserted,
she'd tell it to go to hell,
and she'd find a body of water,
or a mirror, on which to dwell.
So wrap up care in a cobweb
and drop it down the well

into that world inverted
where left is always right,
where the shadows are really the body,
where we stay awake all night,
where the heavens are shallow as the sea
is now deep, and you love me.

Elizabeth Bishop: "It is marvellous to wake up together" / "É maravilhoso despertar juntas": trad. Paulo Henriques Britto

"It is marvellous to wake up together"

It is marvellous to wake up together
At the same minute; marvellous to hear
The rain begin suddenly all over the roof,
To feel the air suddenly clear
As if electricity had passed through it
From a black mesh of wires in the sky.
All over the roof the rain hisses,
And below, the light falling of kisses.

An electrical storm is coming or moving away;
It is the prickling air that wakes us up.
If lightning struck the house now, it would run
From the four blue china balls on top
Down the roof and down the rods all around us,
And we imagine dreamily
How the whole house caught in a bird-cage of lightning
Would be quite delightful rather than frightening;

And from the same simplified point of view
Of night and lying flat on one’s back
All things might change equally easily,
Since always to warn us there must be these black
Electrical wires dangling. Without surprise
The world might change to something quite different,
As the air changes or the lightning comes without our blinking,
Change as our kisses are changing without our thinking.

"É maravilhos despertar juntas"

É maravilhoso despertar juntas
No mesmo minuto; maravilhoso ouvir
A chuva começando de repente a crepitar no telhado,
Sentir o ar limpo de repente
Como se percorrido pela eletricidade
Numa rede negra de fios no céu.
No telhado, a chuva cai, tamborilando,
E cá embaixo, caem beijos brandos.

Uma tempestade está  chegando ou indo embora;

.

One art

The art of losing isn't hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

I lost my mother's watch. And look! my last,
or next-to-last, of three loved houses went.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,
some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent.
I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster.

Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture
I love) I shan't have lied. It's evident
the art of losing's not too hard to master
though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster.

a perda, a tantas coisas, é latente
que perdê-las nem chega a ser azar.

Perde algo a cada dia. Deixa estar:

Duas cidades lindas. Mais: um par
de rios, uns reinos meus, um continente.
Perdi-os, mas não foi um grande azar.

Mesmo perder-te (a voz jocosa, um ar
que eu amo), isso tampouco me desmente.
A arte da perda é fácil, apesar
de parecer (Anota!) um grande azar.

Elizabeth Bishop: To the admirable Miss Moore

To the Admirable Miss Moore

To the Admirable Miss Moore
Of whom we're absolutely sure,

Knowing that through the longest night
Her syllables will come out right,
Her similes will all flash bright

What can we give, yet not be rude,
To show the proper gratitude?

***********************************

Para a admirável Miss Moore

Para a admirável Miss Moore,
Que é o que há de melhor,

E fará, na noite mais longa,
Com as sílabas mais redondas,
As figuras que mais deslumbram,

Que dar, sem ser indelicada,
À guisa de “muito obrigada”?
